Last year I was invited to speak to non-pediatric physicians regarding vaccines. The objective of the presentation was to discuss how pediatric offices manage the vaccine process (i.e. staff coordination, fulfillment, inventory management, administration, purchasing, storage, etc). My talk had a section that highlighted the importance of physician buying alliances and group purchasing organizations (GPO’s) in an effort to show that if the process was managed right, vaccines can add to the bottom line.
One of the things that struck me at the time was how little these physicians knew about GPO’s. I did two talks. One on the East Coast and the other on the West Coast. The blank faces were equal between the two groups when I asked how many of them used GPO’s. I couldn’t believe it.
Later I realized, and admitted to myself, that our practice had been opened for 2 1/2 years before we found out about GPO’s. So look who was talking.
GPO’s are a vital (financial) component of medical practices. And for pediatric practices, I’d say mandatory.
So with that in mind, I’ve made another change to the blog and added a GPO page that highlights some of the top GPO’s in the nation.
You know the Geico commercial that says, a 15-minute call can save you 15% on your car insurance? Well, I’m telling you that a 15-minute call to a GPO can save you a bundle.
