"The Progress Principle" covers the same area that "Drive: Daniel Pink" covered, but also covers a lot of additional material. 'Good Boss, Bad Boss" covers the same area as "The No Asshole Rule", but also expands greatly. Both I found to be great reads that weren't too full of fluff (as many management books tend to be in order to pad out their page count).

A great TED Talk by Daniel Pink (which covers at least half of "Drive")...

I don't know of any such data, but anybody that doesn't think that high employee turnover doesn't cost them is naive or a poor business minded person.

If you look at the best companies to work for (like in Forbes or other sources), you'll notice they are very profitable companies. So I'd argue that there is a correlation between happy employees and profitability.

Thanks for your comments Chris.

Brandon,

Is there any data or benchmarks on staff turnover rates in pediatric practices to help practices measure themselves? I know some practices seem to do a great job of holding onto staff, while other practices seem to have very high tunrover rates. I think managers and physicians often underestimate the costs turnover can have to their practice in terms of customer satisfaction, clinical quality as well as the financial costs.

Speaking as a patient, it's really important your staff be well-treated because what goes around comes around. Patients are often already feeling pretty stressed by the time they get to you as it is.

These metrics are a great beginning to linking quality improvement to making more money at a medical practice. Once a practice gets these metrics and trends them over time they should compare the quality based metric's movement to the revenue based metrics movement and see if they move together. Also, another great idea would be to plot on a graph how a clinic's sick to well ratio trends with profit margin month by month. These types of analysis well help to bridge how health care quality is linked to profit. I am a statistician and an MBA, so if anyone wants any free tips or advice just let me know.
